OceanofPDF Piracy Site Shut Down After Authors Protest Against Illegal Book Downloads

The notorious ebook piracy website OceanofPDF has been taken offline after months of distributing free downloads of copyrighted books without permission from authors or publishers.

Hosted in the US, the site offered thousands of PDF and EPUB files and operated for about seven months. Prominent UK authors including Philip Pullman, Robin Stevens, and Michelle Harrison publicly condemned the site, with Pullman demanding proof of legal agreements that would allow free distribution of his work.

One of the site’s operators, using the name Nicholas Liam, claimed the platform existed to help readers access books they couldn’t afford or find elsewhere.

Industry groups like the Australian Society of Authors (ASA) encouraged members to issue takedown notices, while the Society of Authors UK welcomed the takedown but warned that infrastructure providers had shown little willingness to act — and the site could return under a different name.

This case highlights the complex and often frustrating reality of fighting digital piracy, even when the violation is clear.
