Phishing and Cyber Fraud Overtake Ransomware as Top Business Threat in 2026
Phishing and cyber fraud are now a bigger concern for business leaders than ransomware.
That’s the key takeaway from the World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook for 2026, released ahead of the annual Davos meeting.
According to the report, cyber-enabled fraud has reached record levels and is now one of the most disruptive threats facing businesses worldwide. Not just financially, but reputationally too.
Fraud Is Everywhere — And Growing Fast
The WEF survey, conducted with Accenture, shows just how widespread the problem has become:
-
77% of business leaders reported an increase in cyber-enabled fraud and phishing
-
73% said they or someone they know in leadership was directly affected
This isn’t just an IT issue anymore. It’s a trust issue.
Phishing Leads the List
Phishing is now the most common form of cyber fraud.
-
62% of respondents were aware of phishing attacks affecting people in their network
-
Attacks now go far beyond email, including SMS phishing (smishing) and voice phishing (vishing)
Other common threats include:
-
invoice and payment fraud (37%)
-
identity fraud (32%)
-
insider or employee-led fraud (20%)
-
romance and impersonation scams (17%)
-
crypto and investment fraud (17%)
Each of these attacks can lead to serious financial losses, stolen credentials, leaked data, and long-term damage to brand trust.
AI Is Making Things Worse
Another major warning in the report is the role of AI.
-
87% of leaders experienced rising AI-related security risks last year
-
94% expect AI to be the biggest factor shaping cybersecurity in 2026
AI is making scams faster, more convincing, and harder to detect. Fake domains, cloned brands, realistic phishing messages and impersonation attacks are becoming the norm.
Why This Matters for Brands and Platforms
As cyber fraud grows, users don’t blame “hackers.”
They blame the brand they trusted.
Fake websites, phishing domains, impersonation pages and scam redirects all steal traffic, money, and reputation. And once trust is gone, it’s hard to win back.
That’s why cybersecurity is no longer just about firewalls and passwords. It’s about visibility, fast detection, and removing abuse before damage spreads.
The Takeaway
The World Economic Forum is clear: cyber risk is now a strategic and economic threat, not just a technical one.
Fraud is scaling. AI is accelerating it. And businesses that don’t actively protect their brand and users are exposed.
Trust is becoming the most valuable asset online — and the easiest one to lose.
